Add a Font Awesome Search icon, with search bar toggle to nav menu

Hello,

I’d like to add a (font awesome) search icon, right after the cart, as displayed in the concept below.

When you click on the icon, I’d like a search bar to be toggled, similar to how it toggles on this site:
http://www.preciousmitre.com

It doesn’t have to work exactly the same, but its nice and clean and I would like a similar feature.

How would we go about doing this?
