I need some assistance installing the child theme to remove the text over the feature images. When I try to install it, it does not see the parent theme.

Please make sure you have installed the Activello theme before installing child theme.
Could you please share me the child theme that you are trying to install so that i can help you to install it?

Yes that is what I currently have installed.

I was trying to achieve the same results with the featured images.
Try using the attached modified child theme instead.
