Upon clicking on an image, an image pops up in a “gallery” mode which allows users to go left and right. How do I enable the same behavior.

You can achieve this by using the Jetpack plugin Jetpack – WP Security, Backup, Speed, & Growth – WordPress plugin | WordPress.org and configuring its Carousel module as described on the below page.

Do you recommend using Photon?
Yes but recently it is facing some cache issue and not updating images on the server immediately so use it with caution.
