Im new to wordpress. Just wandering how to add thumbnail images to recent posts to be displayed in the sidebar.

You can use some of the plugins like this or any other one http://wordpress.org/plugins/recent-posts-plus/
Just browser around WordPress.org to find one that suits your needs. There is plenty of plugins for that.
