Has any forum user got any suggestions for the easiest way to insert a clickable list of upcoming events on the homepage of Shapely, either as a widget or as the inner html of an enhanced text widget? There are lots of (too many!) free and premium WP plugins for an events calendar, but I can’t see a nice solution for the homepage. I might have to drop back to having just a static clickable image link widget on the homepage, with the actual list of events on a subsidiary page.

I had a look at your site and much of the time is spent loading the images. To improve on this performance, I would recommend that you use CDN such as Cloudflare, KeyCDN or other. Using CDN you will be able to load assets from a subdomain such as cdn.yoursite.com or use URLs provided by CDN itself.
