Is it possible to control the client slider on desktop through external buttons/mouse gestures?
I also have resized my current header to the point where the mobile hamburger menu disappears; custom code I have found in threads with similar problems gets the menu to come back, but only shows the first menu option upon expanding it.

Yes but you have to develop custom code to achieve this.
