I’d like to create random of cycling headers for Illdy.
Has anyone tried this? Any suggestions on best approach?

In order to add this feature, the header would have to be rewritten with new custom code to have it work and sadly, we would not be able to provide that kind of support here.Now, you can instead use a third party plugin to add random slider to the homepage. Here is a link to a few options:
