Hello, I know there are plugins that add categories to media library images, so I wonder if there is a way to change the theme’s code in order to use categorized media library images in the slider instead of posts featured images. I just want that nice slider in the frontpage, I don’t want the images linking to any post, no titles, no excerpts.

You have to develop custom code to achieve this.
Instead you can use pages images instead of posts images for the slider by using the child theme solution posted in the following topic.
