Strange behavior of slider images and homepage widgets

If you visit my site: http://www.openscholar.org.uk
you will notice that while the first image on the slider is displayed the navigation bar is not responding. After the second image on the slider is presented the problem disappears and it is only then that the homepage widgets are loaded.
