After failing to get what I needed from several other templates, I’ve finally been able to make some headway with Illdy. I’d like to add a widget, specifically a slideshow, but the template only wants to add more of its own widgets. Any help is appreciated.

You could download a plugin such as meta slider to create your slider, and add it to the full-width section by adding the shortcode for the slider in a text widget.
You can then move this full-width section on your front page, however, you can’t replace the Jumbotron section with the slider as that’s locked, and cannot be removed or moved.
