Add "Your Latest Posts" to static front page

Hi,
Is there a way to generate a short code for the default theme your latest posts that display on the dynamic page?
I am currently using the Advanced Recent Posts plugin for this but I much prefer the look of the default.

Alternatively, is there a way to insert a content area above or below the default recent posts so I can put some text/widgets in there?
