I have a discrepancy in the sort order of my categories menu (named Links of interest). It is sorted alphabetically when it appears on the actual webpage, but is structured correctly in the default settings of the categories widget - see attached.

The category menu will sort alphabetically so you would have to use a third party menu plugin to change that. Here is one such plugin:
Another option is to put the year as the first item in the category title, such as:
2015 March Arctic Lapland

It’s sorted already, using the plug in! Just out of interest why does it sort alphabetically when you can re-order them? I assumed if I put them in a specific order with the “order” arrow controls, it would stay in that order

It will keep the order for the normal menu items but when it comes to things like the categories it will auto alphabetize.
