I have added a few test articles to test the slider. There is about a 5 second delay in loading the slider. Is this something that can be fixed, or do I have some code that is interfering?

It seems this is happening on your site because of the large slider images which are taking time to load.
To resolve the issue try regenerating the thumbnail images by using the following plugin.
