My client prefers the default category view of two main posts side by side, then a smaller double column below with the sidebar.
Is there a way to get it on the front page?

There isn’t a theme option that supports this.
It would have to be done via modification of the theme files which is beyond the scope of support provided.
I can point you in the right direction.
If you do have coding experience, you’ll have to look at the archive.php which has that particular layout.
If you don’t have any coding experience, I suggest hiring a freelance developer to assist you with this.
