I’m wondering if it has some sort of design functionality to let the user known if an item has been added to the basket since I cannot see anything documented aside from the element list in one of the pages the template has.

No, this is only HTML template, there is no backend functionality in this template 
I’m not asking about backend functionality. I’m asking if there is a design element or animation functionality integrated in the css that can let the user known that there is an item (or more) in the cart. Let’s say a number for example or a modal view window that I might be missing.
