when I select add text widget, it allows me to add a widget. However there is no box for me to put the text in. Please see attached photo. I have googled this problem, people say it is normal because of theme update. Please help. Thanks

This is strange, Its hard to say from the screenshot, but is this happening from the Appearance > Widgets section?
To verify its not a theme issue, please try activating a default WorldPress Theme such as Twenty Sixteen, and try adding a text widget, and let me know your findings.
